Clinical research in neurodegenerative diseases

The clinical research of the Neurodegenerative Diseases research group focuses on the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in degenerative basal ganglia disorders, mainly Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Huntington’s disease (HD).

With respect to diagnostic tools, we study tools for the diagnosis of early PD including psychophysical olfaction tests and functional imaging using fluorodopa and positron emission tomography. These studies are preformed in close collaboration with the Department of Nuclear Medicine and the Smell and Olfaction Clinic at the Department of HNO .

Furthermore, we investigate novel treatment strategies for the advanced stages of PD, in particular for the treatment of levodopa-induced dyskinesias. We also perform deep brain stimulation in PD and dystonia in collaboration with Dr. Kan Koy, Department of Neurosurgery at the TU Dresden.

As the regional center for Eastern Germany, we are part of the Kompetenznetz Parkinson .

The clinical investigations in HD are perforemd in close cooperation with the Euro-HD-Network. This network allows international mulicenter studies in this rare hereditary neurodegenerative disorder.

The Storch group were part of the Local Organizing Committee of the 3rd World Congress on Huntington’s disease 2007 in Dresden beteiligt.
